I Want To Get Into Doctor Who, Where Do I Start?

Over Christmas as well as gorging oneself on a lot of food & drink, I watched Doctor Who. Despite being a self professed geek & lover of all things sci fi, I’ve never really got into Doctor Who. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas episode.

With that said, I wouldn’t mind getting into it. Should I? Any good episodes/series to watch?

  1. As a doctor who addict, who owns every episode of the new doctor who on DVD, I suggest you start by watching the new series 1 with Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper:

Not as good as Tennant but you need to watch it to get the references in some later episodes.

Then get all the other box sets too!

Failing that, watch online. I watched em all online before I bought all the box sets!

  2. Hey Rhys,

I was going to suggest starting with Series 5 because I found it to be much more consistent than the first four series, but I think I’ll agree with Carly instead.

Series 2-4 each has a Christmas Special at the beginning, they tend to be standalone but they’re usually worth watching. Don’t forget to get “The Specials” that sit between Series 4 and 5, to be honest they’re a bit patchy but still worth watching for the continuity.

Series 5 occurs after the Specials and before the Xmas episode you just saw, the only thing to bear in mind is that the head writer changed at this point so there’s quite a big change. But I think it’s a good change.

I’m a big fan of Doctor Who, it’s a lot of fun to watch – hope you enjoy it šŸ™‚

  3. As possibly the biggest Doctor Who nerd in the room at the moment (because C’s making our dinner) I suggest starting at the best place – the beginning. And I don’t mean Eccleston, I mean Hartnell.

In case you haven’t got a few spare months to catch up with things between Doctor number One and Doctor number Nine (Eccleston) then begin with the first Russell T Davis episode “Rose” and continue from there. I’d personally miss out any with David Tennant and Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) but thats just because she’s a crap actress.

Best episodes off the top of my head are:
Rose, The Doctor Dances, Army Of Ghosts/Doomsday, Blink, The Eleventh Hour, The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang.

THEN you’ve got Torchwood and the Sarah Jane Adventures to watch, too. Torchwood is just as good, if not better, than Doctor Who. Fact.

  4. Ha the Christmas one was awful in comparison to every other Dr Who i’ve ever seen!
Definately start with the Billie Piper series. x
